The Reality of Being Virtual

Description

During lectures, students will synchronously discuss the readings in a VR space via the Engage platform while the rest of the class observes. Students will also alternate between guest lecturers and VR experiences. After panel discussions, students will take a short quiz covering all of the prior activities from the week (e.g., readings, VR activities, student panels).

The program is 8 weeks long. The program offers multiple starts per year. This program is offered in an online format, largely through live online sessions. The cost is $495 and students are required to purchase an Oculus Quest 2 headset, as much of the learning will occur while immersed in virtual reality

What is Handshake?

Handshake is a career services platform created for student and alumni to use in their career development. It's used by over 200,000 employees, including all Fortune 500 companies! Thousands of internships and job opportunities are posted ion Handshake by employers specifically looking to hire students.

All students have a Handshake account that is automatically created for them once they begin their program of study at the U. Once you receive an email notification, all you have to do is log into Handshake to activate your account. Handshake will then recommend certain positions to you based on your profile allowing for easy searching. Comparing and updating your profile will provide Handshake with a better idea of which job interviews/internships listings you may be interested in.

  • Upload your resume for an online critique from the Toppel Career Center

The office of Professional Advancement (OPA) is also excited to announce that our students now have access to the Otto G. Richter Library services throughout the duration of their respective certificate programs.

Students can use the online resources at the Library.

For accessing certain resources, students may need to go through UM IT authentication and enter their CaneID and passwords. Students can retrieve their CaneID and password at https://caneidhelp.miami.edu/.

Students are also able to check out books in person. To do so, they may stop by the Access Services desk to pick up a library card on their first visit to the Richter Library Building, located at Otto G. Richter Library Building, 1300 Memorial Drive, Coral Gables, Florida 33146.

Thomas Merrick

Thomas Merrick is a virtual reality enthusiast who has taught VRin the Virtual Human Interactive Lab at Stanford, he has worked with VR Startup Companies like Inspirit, and he currently serves as the Project Manager for the Virtual Reality Learning Experience at the University of Miami. He was an associate partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM and also spent 20 years in education as an administrator and teacher focused on math, science, statistics, and computer science. He received an MA from Columbia in private school leadership, and he is a 2020 Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute Fellow.
