Physical Therapy Aide Certificate Program

A Physical Therapy Aide is generally responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of physical therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering supplies and devices, and transporting patients, working under the direction of a physical therapist. Phycial Therapy Aides can be employed in hospitals, nursing homes, orthopedic clinics, sports medicine centers, and more. This program prepares participants for a career in the growing field of physical therapy.

Description

This Physical Therapy Aide Certificate program will prepare learners to enter the growing field of Physical Therapy. Physical therapy aims to resotre moter funtion to the human body by alleviating and correcting movement disorders. The Physical Therapy Aide program participatnts will learn how to perform the non-technical duties of physical therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering supplies and devices, and transporting patients working under the direction of the physcial therapist. 

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Physcial Therapy Aide Certificate Program, learners should be able to demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Applying medical terminology effectively in the practice of physical therapy.
  • Utilizing an understanding of anatomy and physiology topics in the clinical setting.
  • Teaching therapeutic exercises under the direction of the physical therapist.
  • Defining therapeutic modalities and their proper uses in the clinical setting.
  • Examing wellness topics and the role of physical therapy in rehabilitation.
  • Explaining specific topics common to physical therapy. 
  • Perfomring administrative tasks related to the physical therapy office.

All students have a Handshake account that is automatically created for them once they begin their program of study at the U. Once you recieve an email notification, all you have to do is log into Handshake to activate our account. Handshake will then recommend certain positions to you based on your profiloe allowing for easy searching. Comparing and updating your profile will provide Handshake with a better idea of which job interviews/internships listings you may be interested in.

Students can sue the online resources at https://www.library.miami.edu/.

For accessing certain resouces, students may need to go through UM IT authentication and enter their CaneID and passwords. Students can retrieve their CaneID and passwords at https://caneidhelp.miami.edu/

Students are  also able to check out books in person. To do so, they may stop by the Access Services desk to pick up a library card on their first visit to the Richter Library Building, located at Otto G. Richter Library, 1300 Memorial Drive, Coral Gables, Florida 33146.

Susan Davis 

Susan Davis, PT, DScPT

Dr. Susan Davis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Simmons College in 1989 and a Doctor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Maryland in 2006. In addition, Susan attained a Graduate Certificate in Distance Education from the University of Maryland. She has twenty-five years of clinical healthcare experience in a variety of healthcare settings from hospitals to home care agencies to outpatient facilities. She holds the Certified Coding Association certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)

In addition to teaching for the University of Miami's Medical Billing  and Coding. Dr. Davis has been teaching  in prestigious healthcare programs  at the University of Maryland and Logan University for eight years. She also has been developing coursework for these schools and others in healthcare and electronic medical record programs, creating courses that include Computer Office Systems, Medical Insurance, Electronic Medical Administration Procedures, Medical Terminology, Anatomy & PHysiology, and many more.
