About the Program

The Allergy Diagnostics & Allergen Immunotherapy Training Workshop empowers physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, and other medical professionals to develop evidence-based skills and knowledge in the field of allergy and immunology. Participants will learn leading practices from Miller School of Medicine clinical practitioners and faculty, including a board-certified otolaryngologist with more than 30 years of experience.

This program is offered through the University of Miami Division of Continuing and International Education, in collaboration with MDaedificare.

Why is allergy diagnosis and treatment important?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost exceeding $18 billion, affecting more than 50 million Americans each year. This substantial need for allergy diagnosis and treatment is one of the many reasons the treatment of allergies and many chronic conditions is shifting to primary care and pediatric offices. Evidence shows that patient outcomes are improved, and medical costs are reduced through proper allergy diagnosis and increased access to management and treatment.

Meet Our Instructors

Dr. Zafar Nawaz

Dr. Zafar Nawaz is a professor at the University of Miami Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is an internationally recognized scientist with over 20 years of experience investigating mechanisms of gene regulation by steroid hormone receptors in cancers and neurological diseases. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed papers, has received several prestigious awards and honors, and is a member of several professional societies.

Dr. Fredric W. Pullen II

Dr. Fredric W. Pullen II is a researcher, surgeon, professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and practitioner with more than 30 years of experience in allergy and immunology. He is published in several peer-reviewed publications and books, certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, and a member of several society memberships, including the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.

Dr. Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed

Dr. Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed is a volunteer faculty member at the University of Miami Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with more than 30 years of experience as a practicing physician. He has also been a clinical professor at Nova Southeastern University, Barry University, Keiser University, and Florida International University.

Dr. Bjorn Herman

Dr. Bjorn Herman is an assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology, an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, and serves as Director of Otolaryngology Services for UM's Palm Beach County satellite clinics. He attended medical school at Columbia University and completed his otolaryngology residency at UM.

Dr. Marcos A. Sanchez-Gonzalez

Dr. Sanchez-Gonzalez is an expert in cardiovascular physiology and how untreated or poorly managed allergies affect cardiovascular health. He is also a graduate medical education administrator and Vice President for Research and Academic Affairs at Larkin Community Hospital. He has conducted research, in both university and hospital settings, on quality improvement, patient outcomes, and physician burnout.

The Allergy Diagnostics & Allergen Immunotherapy Training Workshop will be held remotely on Saturday, March 13, 2021, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The program is a one-day, nine-hour workshop. For more information, please call 305-284-4000 to connect with an enrollment advisor.

The registration fee for the one-day Allergy Diagnostics & Allergen Immunotherapy Training Workshop is $500. Groups of 10 or more participants are eligible for discounts. Financial assistance and payment plans are available for this program.

To earn the certificate, participants must have prior recognized medical training. Recognized degrees include M.D., D.O., nursing, or physician assistant; certified medical assistants may also qualify to earn the certificate.
