The Building Expertise in Administration and Management (BEAM) certificate program is offered by the University of Miami, Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and the School of Business Administration in partnership with the de Beaumont Foundation to develop public health leaders. Through the BEAM certificate program, public health professionals will gain a solid foundation in essential business administration skills that are necessary for career growth and professional development. Developed as an online, self-paced curriculum, students will examine basic budgeting in public health, finance, accounting, contracts, management, and strategic thinking.  BEAM is an interactive, self-paced, non-credit bearing, online certificate program geared towards working professionals and their need for strategic tools that drive innovation and success. Our curriculum draws on the expertise of industry leaders and the University of Miami’s stellar faculty, and features situational work-based activities.

    Employment of public health professionals with strong administrative and management skills is projected to grow by 16 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all U.S. occupations. In general, employment growth of public health professionals with business skills is expected to be closely tied to the health of the overall economy. As the economy grows, more public health workers should be needed to prepare and examine, program financial vitality.

  • What Will I Learn?

    The BEAM certificate curriculum will cover critical public health administration and management topics on basic budgets, budget narratives, budget monitoring, handling restricted accounts, expenditures, incomes, overspending, forecasting future needs, measuring financial health of public health program, contracts, developing scope, due diligence, problem solving, root cause analysis, Flow charts and process mapping, prioritization matrix, strategic thinking, and identifying and mitigating risk.

  • How Will I Benefit From UM's Program?

    The BEAM Certificate Program was developed to enhance the foundational business skills in public health program managers. The Program will build strategic skills that complement and enhance your current skills and will increase your competitiveness in the workplace.

  • Is This Program Right For Me?

    The BEAM Certificate Program is an excellent program for non-profit or non-governmental public health professionals looking to develop their foundational business skills. However, most examples and case studies draw from real-world historical and contemporary governmental public health scenarios.

  • How Long Is The Program?

    The BEAM Program can be completed in 20 hours. There is additional independent, offline course work. Students will be allowed up to 3 months to complete the Program but it can be completed more quickly than that.

  • Program Format & Location

    The certificate program is completed completely online. It is a self-paced curriculum where students can log into the University of Miami courses blackboard system and complete BEAM program modules as time permits within the 3-month cohort period.

    Tuition for the BEAM Certificate Program is $500.

  • What Can I Do After Earning The Certificate?

    Students who complete the BEAM Certificate Program will have an understanding of basic budgeting in public health, finance, accounting, contracts, process management, and strategic thinking. These skills can be implemented and used immediately in their job function and public health business processes.

  • What Are The Requirements To Earn The Certificate?

    There are no pre-requisites to enroll in the certificate program. Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Public Health or Masters of Public Health can enroll in the BEAM Certificate program that will provide added value to their ongoing public health training.

    Badges are earned by successfully completing a certificate program through the Office of Professional Advancement. * Upon completion, you will receive an email with instructions on how to collect your badge. Once collected, you can display your badge on social media sites like LinkedIn. Any potential employer will be able to click on the badge for a list of specific skills associated with the respective certificate received.
