Nonprofit managers are an integral part of the workplace team, with unique responsibilities stemming from the nature of the nonprofit business structure. The University of Miami Nonprofit Operational Management Certificate Program teaches both the academic and the functional proficiencies needed to successfully fill that role. The program also teaches the skills to hold a nonprofit true to its mission statement while competitively going beyond traditional nonprofit business models in acts of charity and business development. By exploring crucial topics such as human resources, public policy, regulatory compliance, and community relations from a management perspective, students will gain the knowledge and abilities to work both ethically and effectively as nonprofit managers.
This program is offered through the Office of Professional Advancement at the University of Miami.
Nonprofits also focus on a diverse array of topics including education, politics, human rights, animal welfare, art preservation, and environmental issues. Workers with a wide range of interests and experience can find careers in a field they feel passionate about, and often at a higher pay rate than wages offered in the private sector. Social and community service managers, for example, who often work for nonprofit organizations, earn salaries that are nearly double the annual median wage for all workers, and the U.S. Department of Labor projects employment in this job category to soar 21% between 2012 and 2022.
Program learning outcomes include: evaluating human resource issues for a nonprofit entity; identifying ethical issues that arise in a nonprofit environment; examining programming, financing, and community relations in the nonprofit environment; understanding board governance and relations; and developing strategies for effective fundraising and volunteer management.
During the course of the program, each student will create an ePortfolio of their completed assignments to showcase program learning and program outcome mastery. This is a valuable tool to demonstrate professional skills and knowledge to the student’s current or potential employers.
The online format gives students the freedom to work at their own pace, navigating through modules of content which build on topics presented in the program’s required textbooks. By reviewing custom-curated articles, websites, and other electronic materials, students will expand their knowledge and gain an understanding of current applications in the business sector. Interactive study tools allow students to review key terms and topics prior to written and objective assessments, and practice quizzes increase skill development and prepare students for module tests.
