Fundraising and nonprofit administration are emerging private sector areas, and growing opportunities exist for those who possess knowledge of the nonprofit business structure and have a philanthropic drive to give back to the community. The University of Miami Fundamentals of Philanthropy Certificate Program teaches the unique blend of fundraising, leadership, and management skills needed to assist a nonprofit entity in making a sustainable contribution to society. Students will explore crucial aspects such as board governance and relations, nonprofit programming and financing, and community relations in the nonprofit sector. Additional topics include the evaluation of human resource issues for nonprofits, researching grant funding opportunities, and handling consulting contracts and business development issues.
This program is offered through the Office of Professional Advancement at the University of Miami.
Nonprofits also focus on a diverse array of topics including education, politics, human rights, animal welfare, art preservation, and environmental issues. Workers with a wide range of interests and experience can find careers in a field they feel passionate about, and often at a higher pay rate than wages offered in the private sector. Social and community service managers, for example, who often work for nonprofit organizations, earn salaries that are nearly double the annual median wage for all workers, and the U.S. Department of Labor projects employment in this job category to soar 21% between 2012 and 2022.
Program learning outcomes include: identifying how philanthropists can contribute to charitable causes; understanding board governance and relations; examining programming, financing, and community relations in the nonprofit environment; evaluating human resource issues for a nonprofit entity; and researching grant funding opportunities.
During the course of the program, each student will create an ePortfolio of their completed assignments to showcase program learning and program outcome mastery. This is a valuable tool to demonstrate professional skills and knowledge to current or potential employers.
The online format gives students the freedom to work at their own pace, navigating through modules of content which build on topics presented in the program’s required textbooks. By reviewing custom-curated articles, websites, and other electronic materials, students will expand their knowledge and gain an understanding of current applications in the business sector. Interactive study tools allow students to review key terms and topics prior to written and objective assessments, and practice quizzes increase skill development and prepare students for module tests.
