Because disagreements and stalemates can negatively affect both the morale and the financial success of an organization, the ability to negotiate is one of the most valuable traits in the workplace. The University of Miami Strategies for Successful Negotiation Certificate Program teaches the skills needed to set a proper tone for negotiation, develop a proposal, and communicate effectively in order to reach a resolution beneficial to all involved. Students will heighten their communication and critical thinking skills, learn the power of effective listening, and discover strategies for encouraging higher levels of collaboration. By the program’s end, students will gain the awareness and competence necessary to become a successful negotiator within their organization.

    This program focuses on problem solving, active listening, and the interpersonal skills needed to mitigate conflict and create a harmonious and productive work environment. Students will learn to evaluate a conflict situation, pinpoint the minimum and maximum boundaries for a resolution scenario, identify acceptable terms, and act decisively to facilitate positive change. They will also learn how to deal with possible objections and difficulties in the negotiation process and how to promote a collaborative environment. 

    Program outcomes include: understanding the function and purpose of negotiation; identifying and implementing strategies for successful negotiation; using persuasive techniques to frame and adapt interests reflecting opposing viewpoints; developing communication skills to advance an effective and straightforward proposal; and analyzing the value of persuasion in the negotiation process.

    The University of Miami Strategies for Successful Negotiation Certificate Program is unique in that the learning outcomes are integrated using a facilitated, hands-on approach with module deliverables and application-based writing assignments. Unlike programs based solely on theory, our program connects academics to the workplace by allowing students to experience learning applications based on real-world utilization of the program content, with the benefit of feedback from an industry professional who is an expert in the subject matter.     During the course of the program, each student will create an ePortfolio of their completed assignments to showcase program learning and program outcome mastery. This is a valuable tool to demonstrate professional skills and knowledge to current or potential employers.
