Quick Facts About the Program

  • Career Outlook

From the smallest family-run shop to the largest Fortune 500 corporation, businesses of every size rely on managers to keep things running smoothly. These managers oversee every aspect of the company’s operation, from sales to marketing to finance, even stepping into the owner’s role when necessary. With any business, the core is always its people, and no skill is more crucial than a manager’s ability to lead, direct, and inspire other employees. While a specialization in economics, accounting, production, or other fields can add value to a manager’s resume, the way a manager communicates with those inside and outside the company has the greatest impact on overall success. Managers understand the importance of workplace ethics, critical thinking, and the business decision process, and they utilize these skills to maximize sales and productivity.

Possessing top-notch management skills can open doors in a variety of industries including advertising, sales, construction, marketing, and industrial production, as well as in the hospitality and retail industries. The U.S. Department of Labor projects the employment rate for most management positions will either rise or remain steady between 2012 and 2022. New businesses will seek out management material, while established companies will recognize and reward managers with skill sets that reflect a more modern, forward-thinking business approach.

Human resource managers are also tasked with managing organizational change, and the U.S. Department of Labor expects that field’s employment rate to expand by 13% between 2012 and 2022, higher than the average growth rate for all professions combined.

  • What Will I Learn?

This program will develop a manager’s ability to assess the current state of an organization, visualize and plan the desired future state of the organization, then implement the changes in an organized method. Students will learn to create an environment that is favorable to change, identify and navigate challenges to the process, minimize unfavorable consequences, and provide ample, relevant, and straightforward information to employees while the change is taking place.

Program outcomes include: understanding the concept of organizational change; identifying triggering events that lead to organizational change; building essential skills for handling organizational change; planning for contingencies and ascertaining stakeholder scope of impact; and exploring use of the four frames as a method for managing organizational change and exploring the use of an outside consultant to help facilitate organizational change.

  • How Will I Benefit From UM's Program?

The University of Miami Managing Organizational Change Certificate Program is unique in that the learning outcomes are integrated using a facilitated, hands-on approach with module deliverables and application-based written assignments. The program components are supported by cooperative learning, inquiry-based learning, and hands-on learning methods. Unlike programs based solely on theory, our program connects academics to the workplace by allowing students to experience learning applications based on real-world utilization of the program content, with the benefit of feedback from an industry professional who is an expert in the subject matter. The instructor also maintains a virtual open door to address questions, clarify program content, and interpret career learning connections.

During the course of the program, each student will create an ePortfolio of their completed assignments to showcase program learning and program outcome mastery. This is a valuable tool to demonstrate professional skills and knowledge to current or potential employers.
