Medical billing and coding and its related occupations are among the fastest growing opportunities in the healthcare industry. A certification in MBC will help to prepare students for a rewarding career in a wide array of medical settings such as medical record coders, insurance billers and health information technicians.

    Upon successful completion of the Medical Billing and Coding Certificate Program, students will demonstrate proficiency in:

    1. Applying medical terminology effectively in the practices of medical billing and coding
    2. Differentiating anatomy, physiology and disease pathology concepts in the interpretation of medical documentation and the assignment of standardized codes
    3. Diagnostic and procedural coding
    4. Certification Examination Preparation

  • How Will I Benefit From UM's Program?

    The Medical Billing & Coding Program begins with a standard block of courses necessary to obtain the foundation knowledge needed for certification in billing and coding. Essential sciences are covered in the medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, diagnostic coding, and disease pathology modules. Once these core medical topics are covered, the Program provides the learner with the knowledge and skills needed to perform diagnostic coding, using the ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding systems, and procedural coding. Students will participate in a module specific focusing on CPC® examination preparation.

  • What Can I Do After Earning The Certificate?

    All students will complete the Standard Block of classes, which includes Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, Disease Pathology, Diagnostic Coding and Procedural Coding. You will then choose an add-on module that will prepare you for the certification examination of your choosing: CPC® ,COC™ , CCA®, CPC-P®, and CCS®. Participants who are interested in the CCS certification will also study Pharmacology and Intermediate Coding.

  • What Are The Requirements To Earn The Certificate?

    No specific experience or education required.

  • Required Courses

    This program will prepare you to take one standard block, and a choice of five add ons based on the different coding exams:

    • Medical Billing and Coding Standard Block Certified Professional Coder (CPC®)
    • Medical Billing and Coding Standard Block with Certified Outpatient Coding (COC™)
    • Medical Billing and Coding Standard Block with Certified Coding Associate (CCA®)
    • Medical Billing and Coding Standard Block with Certified Professional Coder-Payer (CPC-P®)
    • Medical Billing and Coding Standard Block with Certified Coding Specialist (CCS®)

    How does it Work?

    Badges are earned by successfully completing a certificate program through the Office of Professional Advancement. * Upon completion, you will receive an email with instructions on how to collect your badge. Once collected, you can display your badge on social media sites like LinkedIn. Any potential employer will be able to click on the badge for a list of specific skills associated with the respective certificate received.
