Welcome to the University of Miami Certificate in Happiness Studies (CiHS)

The Certificate in Happiness Studies (CiHS) program is the first and only of its kind.  While there are a number of programs that focus on the psychology of happiness or the philosophy of happiness, there is no program or course that explores happiness through the lens of the different disciplines—including psychology and philosophy, as well as history, theology, biology, economics, literature, art, and so on.

The program provides the knowledge and the tools to generate happiness on the individual, interpersonal, organizational, and national levels.

The program is a 12-month online experience that includes academic lectures and live webinars, as well as ongoing interactions with faculty and other students.  The program comprises two courses:

  1. Introduction to Happiness Studies.  A theoretical and scientific exploration of the field.
  2. Facilitating Happiness.  Evidence-based tools and techniques for a happier life.

Quick Facts About the Program

  • Career Outlook

Graduates of the certificate program are well prepared to do the following:

    • Assume the role of Chief Happiness Officers (CHOs) or a Wellbeing Program Manager of an organization—whether a business, an NGO or a school.
    • Conduct workshops, lead seminars, and deliver lectures in the field of Happiness Studies to the general public or professional groups.
    • Create a new “Happier Center” or join an existing one and help people realize their potential for leading a happy, fulfilling life. A center can be an independent entity serving the community, be part of an existing business providing programs for employees, or be a part of a school serving faculty and students.

  • What Will I Learn?

We define happiness as the experience of wholeperson wellbeing, or in short, the experience of wholebeing.  The five elements essential to a life of wholebeing are: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Relational, Emotional.  Taken together, these elements make up the acronym SPIRE, and indeed they inspire all of our programs—from our introductory lectures on happiness to the one-year Certificate in Happiness Studies.

The first course, Introduction to Happiness Studies, spans 28 weeks and includes 26 pre-recorded one-hour lectures and 13 live one-hour webinars.  The course provides a comprehensive overview of the field of happiness studies, as well as evidence-based tools and techniques for increasing levels of happiness.

The second course is slightly shorter, spanning 22 weeks and includes 14 lectures and six webinars.  While both courses include a healthy dose of theory and practice, the emphasis in the first course is on knowledge and understanding (what happiness is and what a field of happiness studies is all about) while the emphasis in the second course is on tools and techniques (how to generate happiness on the individual, interpersonal, organizational, and national levels).
