Quick Facts About the Program

  • Career Outlook

From the smallest family-run shop to the largest Fortune 500 corporation, businesses of every size rely on managers to keep things running smoothly. These managers oversee every aspect of the company’s operation, from sales to marketing to finance, even stepping into the owner’s role when necessary. As with any business, the core is always its people, and no skill is more crucial than a manager’s ability to lead, direct, and inspire other employees. While a specialization in economics, accounting, production, or other fields can add value to a manager’s resume, the way a manager communicates with those inside and outside the company has the greatest impact on overall success. Managers understand the importance of workplace ethics, critical thinking, and the business decision process, and they utilize these skills to maximize sales and productivity.

Possessing top-notch management skills can open doors in a variety of industries including advertising, sales, construction, marketing, and industrial production, as well as in the retail and hospitality industries. The U.S. Department of Labor projects the employment rate for most management positions will either rise or remain steady between 2012 and 2022. New businesses will seek out management material, while established companies will recognize and reward managers with skill sets that reflect a more modern, forward-thinking business approach.

  • What Will I Learn?

The program offers new ways to recognize and defuse problems, enhances the ability to become an active listener, and motivates students to create contingency plans regarding predictable future situations. Key concepts such as relationship building, productive communication, becoming an empathic listener, and effective decision making give students the power to effectively assess new conflicts and achieve solutions in a wide variety of circumstances.

Program learning outcomes include: analyzing and diagnosing how to manage conflict; explaining how conflict situations arise in the workplace; understanding the benefits of utilizing facilitation for conflict resolution in the workplace; describing the function of mediating conflict; and applying negotiation skills to manage conflict.
